For something free, Avira AntiVir does a really great job of detecting malware on your PC, including viruses, worms, trojans, and costly dialers. It uses the same engine as the paid version (which is able to deliver 99.6% catch rate according to AV-Test.org), with an addition of annoying pop-up urging you to upgrade to the paid version.
